The solenoid opens the gas valve to feed the flame when you turn on a gas furnace or gas heated clothes dryer. The solenoid opens the gas valve when a glow stick gets hot enough to ignite the gas which turns the burner on. This causes the gas valve to widen or narrow in front of the pilot light to respond to changes in building temperature. While the component itself if actually rather simple a furnace gas valve is a crucial part of your hvac system.

There are also gas valves located. I will be checking various gas valves to see if you can check the continuity of the solenoid with an ohmmeter. Because gas is involved problems with gas valves are a major safety concern. Some gas valves cannot be checked with an ohmm.

Furnace gas valves are only seen on gas fueled forced air furnaces or gas powered boilers. Furnace gas valves are wired to an electronic component known as a solenoid which receives signals from the thermostat control.
